Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions that I might be asked before starting a design project for a new customer.
Do we need to meet in person?
That really depends on the project. It's certainly not necessary to meet up before the start of every new project but I do like to meet brand new customers because that's the best way for me to get a feel for your business, and gain a better understanding of your company ethos. Generally it is possible to discuss smaller projects over the phone and communicate via email.
How does the design process work?
What do you need from me before you start?
This depends on the requirements of the project, but generally I ask you to supply text content, and any imagery that you would like me to include in the design. I also need a high resolution copy of your company logo if you have one (preferably a vector file). If you need help sourcing photos I will advise you of what we need, and can source this for you, whether it's a product photoshoot or stock imagery. Please note that if you supply imagery to me it is your responsibility to ensure that you have permission to use the files provided.
Do you get it right every time?
There are usually many many ways to portray a message and although I always try to understand a customers ideas and preferences perfectly there is usually some development to be done. Take a piece of art, does one picture fit everyone’s preferences? Definitely not! That’s why I work with my customers to develop all artwork until we are both happy with the look, feel and message.
What if the first proof need changes?
I am usually working on many completely different projects at a time and each one has to start somewhere. When I send an initial proof I totally understand that everyone has their own preferences and that the first design might need to be adapted to suit your business better. The best thing for me is to get your honest feedback at the first proof stage as this gives me something to work with. For me there’s nothing better than knowing I have worked to my customers preferences. I take all feedback as a positive because it helps me to move in the right direction more quickly. I generally include up to two artwork revisions in the initial design estimate.
How do you charge?
There are a few options:
I will usually provide a design estimate per-project. This is usually a total design fee for every individual job. I will also quote for printing if you'd like me to organise the printing for you.
In addition to working on a per-project basis I can also provide an in-house design department service.
In-house Freelance Day Work
If you'd like me to work freelance at your place of business, carrying out all of your graphic design requirements for either a day a week, a month or a quarter then please contact me to chat through my availability as well as your requirements. This service works really well for my customers that have recurring deadlines for product pricelists, or need frequent literature updates because I have access to everything on-site, on a set day. It also helps with your project planning.
I am happy to travel within a 20 mile radius of my studio for freelance work, which covers Mid Devon and Somerset, Exeter, Tiverton, Taunton, Wellington and Honiton.
If you have on-going needs for promotional material every month it can help with budgeting to set a monthly fee for your design requirements. That way you can send me your design brief and I will send you back a proof, saving the need for quotation approval on each project, and speeding up the project process. This can also be agreed to complete a single large project, e.g. a large product catalogue.
